SUGAR CITY—This year, Sugar-Salem High School’s drama department is putting on a production of “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.” Nancy Robinson is the director with Preston Bowthorpe as the music director.

Robinson says the reason they were drawn to this musical was because it had a little bit of everything for everyone: romance, action, and humor.

“This musical looked like it would be so much fun, and it has been!” Robinson said. “When I started working with the music director last April to decide what show to do, I thought about this show. I looked closer at the casting requirements and as soon as I saw that the eight roles of the D’Ysquith family were to be played by one actor, I knew we had to do it. It is so witty and funny. I was worried a little bit what the audience might think about a play where the ‘hero’ is a murderer, but it’s so funny and creatively written that I guarantee they will love it and simply find themselves getting excited to see what’s about to happen next.”

A summary from Musical Theatre International:

When the low-born Monty Navarro finds out that he’s eighth in line for an earldom in the lofty D’Ysquith family, he figures his chances of outliving his predecessors are slight and sets off down a far more ghoulish path. Can he knock off his unsuspecting relatives without being caught and become the ninth Earl of Highhurst? And what of love? Because murder isn’t the only thing on Monty’s mind….

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder is a murderous romp filled with unforgettable music, non-stop laughs and eight scene-stealing roles all played by one actor representing all eight of the doomed heirs who meet their ends in the most creative and side-splitting ways.
