REXBURG, Idaho—Darnell Shipp of Egin has announced his Idaho State Senate candidacy for District 31. He will be running against the incumbent for that seat, Sen. Van Burtenshaw, in the 2022 primary elections.

“The reason that I’ve decided to run is to be involved, trying to support what I feel is right,” Shipp said. “I feel like we’re losing ground. And I need to get deeper in the fight, so to speak. We’ve had the opportunity to go to Boise a couple times, and witness what happens there.”

Shipp expressed dissatisfaction with the state of affairs in Idaho and on the national level.

‘”I believe that we have some great people in office, but there’s a lot of people that are standing in the way of progress, so to speak,” Shipp said. “And so I’ve decided to run and get involved on the ground floor.”

Shipp worked at the Idaho National Laboratory for 30 years. He retired in November 2021. He is a father of 7 and grandfather of 25. He and his family have lived in Eastern Idaho for 35 years, first moving to Rigby, and ending up on the Egin Bench in the St. Anthony area where he currently lives with his wife, Lucy.

“I would definitely call myself a constitutional conservative,” Shipp said when asked about his political leanings. “We’re facing we’re facing some serious issues in the United States. I think we need to get back to the original Constitution.”

Shipps’ political platform includes promoting limited government, strengthening state sovereignty, strengthening and prospering local communities, putting families first, and insisting on truth in the education system.
