REXBURG– As winter quickly approaches, it’s time to prepare for bitter cold, and dark. As the warm colors of autumn give way to the sparkling white of fresh snow banks, it’s easy to lose the wonder of winter in dread of the upcoming freezing months. Keep reading for tips on how to thrive in Rexburg this winter.

  1. Key in on nutrition

It’s no secret that a healthy body can help develop a healthy mind. Try celebrating the winter by leaning into seasonal, warming comfort foods. Sweet potatoes, squash, kale and root vegetables carry a nutritional punch while featuring some of the best flavors of winter. Some meals that feature classic winter flavors include West African Peanut Stew, Butternut Squash Soup and traditional Chicken Pot Pie (feel free to adjust the veggies to suit your preference and seasonal availability!)

  1. Practice hygge

Hygge has been a buzz word for a few years now. This word stems from Denmark and is related to coziness in the home as a way to combat dark winters. Crafting a home environment that you actively love to be in can help prepare for another Southeastern Idaho winter. Try warm drinks, cozy loungewear, blankets, read-alouds and warm lighting.

  1. Find an activity you can only do in the snow

Give yourself a reason to look forward to winter! Try skiing or snowboarding. Waiting all year to pull out the sporting goods can make all the difference in greeting the changing seasons. Even taking a sled out to Jefferson Lake or other local hills can give a rush of excitement and help build excitement for the next several months. Plus, who doesn’t love a good snowman?

  1. Go outdoors- even if it hurts

Another Scandinavian concept, there’s no such thing as bad weather; just bad clothing is quite applicable here in Rexburg. Bundle up and head outdoors. A good, vigorous walk or even just sitting outside can help transform this winter. Many houses in Rexburg are already decorated for Christmas, so consider taking a stroll to enjoy the festivities. If the weather truly is too much, consider staying active on the indoor track at the BYUI campus.

  1. Practice gratitude

Thanksgiving serves as a transitionary holiday between autumn and full winter. As preparation for this day of gratitude, try to establish a practice of giving thanks for the things that deserve celebration. Say ‘thank you’ often. Rexburg has plenty to love– why not make the best of this often difficult season?
