A message from Emily Miller, owner of Rexburg Commons
Hello, Rexburg,
According to this website, only about 2,000 of us voted in the last city council election.
Why is it important? Our local leaders make decisions that affect our way of life right here in Rexburg.
Among other things:
- They decide on the local laws, specific to our community, that businesses are subject to.
- They ratify appointments made to committees like the Planning and Zoning Commission.
- The City Council ultimately makes the decisions about zoning laws that dictate where certain kinds of development, such as residential or commercial, will go.
- They decide how dense a residential area can be, anywhere from rural with large lots to high-density housing (apartment complexes).
- Over the last couple years, the council has unexpectedly had to manage public health issues and make decisions for a large group of people who don’t always agree with each other.
- The City Council has the responsibility of allocating tax funds, grant money, stimulus money, etc.
- The city council approves the hiring of city employees.
- They decide on what road and utility projects to complete and how to fund them.
As you can see, these are important things that affect all of our lives here in Rexburg. This is not a comprehensive list, but hopefully you can get a feel for how important it is that we elect people who will represent us well.
I compiled a list of all the resources I could find for people to learn about our candidates. There are three open seats with two candidates (Brad Wolfe and Mikel Walker) running for reelection.
