REXBURG—The leaves are changing color and that means nature is preparing a new backdrop for photography. Whether you’d prefer posing under vibrant red and orange trees or standing in a frozen tundra, here are the top 7 places for fall and winter photography.
- BYU-Idaho campus/LDS Temple
- Beaver Dick Park
- Warm Slough
- Lyons Creek/Cress Creek
- Twin Bridges Campground
- Mesa Falls
- Island Park
- BYU-Idaho campus/LDS Temple
The campus of Brigham Young University-Idaho is the closest location on our list. The variety of buildings and backgrounds on campus is the reason Parker & Abbey Photography use it in their photography. Just south of campus, the Rexburg Temple features fiery red bushes in the fall and serene, snowy landscapes in winter.
- Beaver Dick Park
Beaver Dick Park is only 10 minutes away from Rexburg. Beaver Dick Park has a variety of backgrounds for fall and winter photography.
- Warm Slough
A 17-minute drive through Rexburg’s backcountry will take you to Warm Slough. This river is 7.9 miles long so you can stop anywhere along the way for photographs.
- Lyons/Cress Creek
Lyons Creek is a river 20 minutes south of Rexburg that you’ll pass on the way to Cress Creek. You can stop along E 10000 S and S Snake River Rd to find a landscape best suited for your pictures. If that doesn’t suit you, you can continue down the road to Cress Creek which is beautiful during the colder months. (Google Maps will help you find both locations.)
- Twin Bridges Campground
Another 20-minute drive south of Rexburg is Twin Bridges Campground. Not unlike Beaver Dick Park, Twin Bridges has a variety of backgrounds for fall and winter photos.
- Mesa Falls
Mesa Falls is 50-minute drive north of Rexburg. Certain roads can close due to snow, but the falls aren’t the only place to take pictures in that area. According to Parker Johnson, from Parker and Abbey Photography, there is an unused rail-road with a tunnel that can be used for photography backgrounds.
- Island Park
Island Park is about an hour north of Rexburg. It features a variety of photo backgrounds such as lakes, forests, mountains, waterfalls.
“It’s pretty in the fall and winter,” says photographer Anna Christine.
