News release from the Museum of Rexburg
REXBURG, Idaho — The Museum of Rexburg, Home of the Teton Flood Exhibit, has announced that the museum will move from its current location at the Rexburg Tabernacle Civic Center in order to be more accessible, expand what the museum offers, and to prepare for much needed renovations to the Tabernacle.
Starting in 2024, “Three Days in June,” the popular flood documentary that has been shown at the museum for many years, will be moved to the Romance Theater at 2 E. Main Street in Rexburg. Patrons will also be able to request showings of “Flood of Memories,” a 2023 documentary produced to share the stories of those who experienced the flood. The lobby will have new, regular hours, and a gift shop.
“We’re expanding the footprint,” says Rexburg Cultural Arts Director Jed Platt. “We’re taking the flood story and experience to the Romance where we can seat more and where it is more accessible.”
With this change, the Romance Theater lobby will include a dedicated Teton Dam Flood Exhibit featuring photos and artifacts from the June 1976 flood. The exhibit will be located on the west wall of the lobby, which already includes a cutout in the wall that shows how high the water was when the flood swept through downtown Rexburg. There will be no charge to enter the lobby and view the exhibit, but there will be a small charge for watching the films or taking a guided tour of the building.
Rotating artifact exhibits and other popular museum features such as arts and crafts, hands-on experiences, I-Spy games, and the escape room will be moved to Rexburg City Hall as of Fall 2024.
Starting in June 2024, The Museum of Rexburg will also offer walking tours of downtown Rexburg.
“We’re expanding the outreach efforts of the museum,” says Museum Curator Alisha Tietjen. “We’re telling our story in different ways.”
December 15, 2023, will be the last day to visit the museum at its current location in the lower level of the Tabernacle Civic Center. The museum is open Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and by appointment. Appointments can be made by calling 208-359-3063.
