REXBURG, Idaho — Rexburg Pediatrics, a new clinic at 404 N Second East in Rexburg, is open and taking appointments for patients 0-18 years old.
The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They also offer an after-hours call service and provide hospital visits for newborns. They are equipped with on-site X-ray and lab capabilities.
The clinic’s providers are pediatricians Gene P. Gates, Jason E. Hymas, and Gary R. Sena, and physician assistant Mark S. Hammar.
Hammar was born and raised in Rexburg and has been practicing since 2005. He enjoys the atmosphere of a pediatric clinic and getting to know the children and their families.
“We try to create an atmosphere that’s really pediatric friendly,” Hammar says. “Not just for kids, but for parents.”
Hammar says opening the new clinic with his longtime associates from Seasons Medical has been a great experience.
“We’re excited to be here at this location,” Hammar says. “To continue doing what we love. I feel grateful that I found a job that I love to go to every day.”
Hymas, also from Rexburg, has been practicing pediatrics for 13 years, and says he loves working with his young patients.
“Kids are much better sick people than adults,” he says with a laugh.
Hymas says he loves the relationships he builds with families in the community by being their healthcare provider.
“You almost become part of the family,” he says.
Hymas says many families choose to switch doctors as kids get a little older, but that Rexburg Pediatrics specializes in teenagers, too.
“We’re trained in all medicine and we love to see the teenagers.
Sena is a native of New Mexico and has lived in Rexburg for 35 years. He has been in healthcare since 1976. Besides pediatrics, he has worked as a paramedic, in emergency services and trauma units, and in wilderness medicine.
“I’ve taken care of multiple generations,” he says. In a full-circle moment on the day of our interview, Sena said he treated a child whose mother he had also had as a patient when she was a baby.
“The children are the future,” Sena says. “Anything we can do to help the future generation is an incredible legacy.”
Each of the providers interviewed express a desire to listen to parents and understand their concerns.
“I really do trust that intuition,” Hymas says.
“We want to give the parents confidence,” Sena says. “Let them know they know what they’re doing.”
