REXBURG — Groundwork for the new Teton River Idaho Temple is currently underway. This includes the installation of bearing canals and preparation for 2nd East to be widened. Groundwork is happening in preparation for the groundbreaking ceremony, which will happen on June 1, 2024, at 10 a.m.
Elder Ricardo P. Giménez, a General Authority for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will preside at the groundbreaking. There will be 500 people in attendance, but the event is invitation only. The event will be broadcast live to the public here and later published at newsroom.ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
The original estimated size was 130,000 square feet, but the Church recently announced that it will be closer to 100,000 square feet. For comparison, the existing Rexburg Idaho Temple is 57,000 square feet. The site for the new temple is across from Walmart.
No official completion date has been announced by the Church. However, Scott Johnson, director of economic developments and public relations for the city of Rexburg, estimates that it will take 2 ½ to 3 years.
